September Camp – KINTSUGI

KINTSUGI - The Skill of Repairing With Gold

The most beautiful and strongest parts are the places of repair and restoration.

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”  – Ephesians 2:10

Sparks, Dirt, Smoke, and Melting Metal

Metal prep, Grinding, Welding, and Painting…

Our young men learned all the needed skills to fabricate and weld together a usable product to serve Advance Camp in the future, a trailer.

Metal Prep

The first thing we went over was metal prep.  The prep work is a lot of the time, the most important part.  You can’t get a clean weld or lay the paint smooth if the surface isn’t prepared properly.  The young men LOVED this part. They ground down metal, threw sparks, knocked off rust, and made a new workable surface on a previously rusted and paint-pealed surface.  Do you know how satisfying that 4-inch grinder on metal can be?

Resurrection

We were gifted axles and a tongue from an old trailer. This was our starting point.  The young men learned how to cut, make things square, tack together, and complete reinforced welds to create a new trailer from discarded parts.

Completed Base

The young men completed the base assembly of the trailer in just under 7 hours.  We had campers not even wanting to weld because it was “too scary” and were outwardly afraid of melting metal with 220 volts…  They later were the ones that pulled up a stool, flipped down their helmet, and completed the majority of the welds in the front of the trailer.
