October 2021 Oregon Camp - Lawn Care

Oregon Advance Camp Lawn Care + Serving a Single Mom

Proverbs 24:27 Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house.

At Advance Camp, we do two "serve camps" per year. At these camps, we get to tie a trade skill and servanthood together. For this camp, we went to the home of a single mom of three little kids. Her husband left in March, and the exterior of the home hadn't been touched since. This created an incredible opportunity for our small but mighty team to make a huge impact both on teaching a number of skills and make a big impact for the mom.

Started With Basics

We started with teaching the young men about proper safety equipment, how to operate the tools of the trade, mixing gas and oil, surveying the project, and evaluating the projected work time. The project was led by a self-made business owner, so the young men got to learn the business side as well.

It's All About Hands-On

There is nothing better than walking away from a project smelling like two-stroke exhaust, dirt, and sweat. The young men were coached on the equipment, worked beside to run it, and given ownership over a project.

The Surprise!!!

At the end of the day, the young men got to take the single mom on a tour around the house and show her what they had done. She was so beyond excited and moved about how her house looked, that it brought her to tears of joy. I got to watch the young men's faces as they realized the impact they made that day for this mom, and it was incredible.
