Forged In Fire, Advance Camp Style

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. Blacksmithing; a Hobby and a Trade

Our campers had the opportunity to learn ornamental blacksmithing and functional trades for the purpose of a career from a local farrier.

Bottle Openers and Horseshoe Hearts

We had four stations of learning at this camp. One of stations was learning to make bottle openers and hearts out of horseshoes. The campers had to earn their way to their refreshing Topo Chico and Jarritos by completing their bottle opener.

Horse Shoes and Tools

Jake, the local Farrier, taught proper hammer control, identification of tools, how to make a horse shoe from bar stock, and a few campers even made their own shoe pick tool. Jake was our main educator for the day. You could tell how much he loved his work. This was impressed on one camper so much that they are lining up an internship for the upcoming summer. The campers eyes were definitely opened to potential careers.

Ornamental Hooks

Another one of our stations was taught by Doug. At this station they learned how to turn old rusty nails into ornamental hooks.

Fabricating and Welding

Y’all may remember our welding and fabrication camp back in September. It was time to apply it to another project so we had three campers, led by Russell, one of our own mentors, building our own coal forge out of a bunch of automotive parts and some conduit. By the end of the day, we were able to forge some items in our homemade forge.
